Check back in December for the 30th Annual Freeze for Food registration information, to be held January 22, 2011.

For more than 25 years the RPCVs of WI-Madison have sponsored a 10K/5K Run/Walk the third Saturday in January in Vilas Park. Funds raised provide support for the Colombia Support Network, which supplies medicine and agricultural equipment and supplies to a community in Columbia despite an ongoing war. CSN representatives are present at the Freeze for Food to provide information about how the race proceeds are used. They also invite people to join their delegation on visits to the project site in Colombia. This event is never cancelled due to weather. Those interested in volunteering for this event should contact Peter Joyce.

    29th Annual FFF Final Report

Hey, it was not freezing this time! We appreciate all the assistance from the hardy souls out there who helped with the races on Saturday, January 23, 2010. This year we brought in $3439.50 for the people of Apartado, Colombia, our second highest take ever for the FFF. Most of the money came from entrance fees, and once again, our top donator was Rich Christopherson. We appreciate the support for the displaced people of Colombia, especially in light of new suffering in Haiti. You can get more information from the Colombia Support Network.

We had approximately 205 runners for the 5K and 10K races. This year for the first time we were able to get electronic registration up in November, which resulted in 81 pre-registrations. With the high number of entrants, this was critical to getting the races started on time.

Expenses were also up this year for a total of $907.60. Fortunately, the group has committed up to $1000 for support of this annual fund-raiser. This allows all the money raised to go to the people of Apartado, Colombia.

    Insurance $395.00
    Shelter Rental $145.00
    Timing equipment $100.00
    Food $136.25
    Brochures $103.92
    Misc. $27.43
    TOTAL $907.60

We had 205 participants for an average of $16.78 per runner/walker.

We had a total of 24 volunteers, with each volunteer putting in an average of 4 hours (event coordinators Rick and Peter put in an extra 10 hours) for a total of 116 hours. This means $3440/116 = $29.65 per volunteer hour. We estimate that if we raise below $15/volunteer hour, it will be time to call it quits.

Honorable mention and thanks go to Vince Ohern and Linda Baldwin for the $850 donation to place the Isthmus ad.

As always, we can use more organization and promotion. Any suggestions for a celebrity starter? The 30th FFF will be January 22, 2011. Anyone interested in getting in on the ground floor of a great event, contact Peter Joyce via email or phone (608-554-0384).
